Cupboards are often sturdy pieces of furniture because they have to be capable of holding a multiple of their own weight. Studio Mieke Meijer took on the challenge of creating a cupboard that manages to be lightweight and yet stable. Meijer drew inspiration from the wings of the kind of aeroplanes produced at the beginning of the 20th century: light, wooden structures covered with textiles. An experimental quest to strike the right balance between stability and ideal weight resulted in a cupboard design, dubbed Airframe 01, weighing only 18.5 kilos.
In the words of the designers from Studio Mieke Meijer: ‘Triplex is one of the support materials from Baars & Bloemhoff's range. My design presents this material in a different light. No longer an inconspicuous structural component out of sight, but right there in the spotlight. The image is partly determined by the oak veneer from Decospan. The title Airframe is an aviation term referring to the structure of an aircraft minus the engines. ‘This corresponds exactly to what I had in mind. It's a cupboard that could fly, in a manner of speaking.’
